A mother of two has just split up and decides to start a new life in Los Angeles. The events take an unexpected turn when it allows three attractive young people to move to their home.

Alice Kinney (Reese Witherspoon) has not been processed so right even after five months of separation from her husband (Michael Sheen), but gives her best to get as a single mother her life back together and her daughters Isabel (Lola Flanery) and Rosie (Eden Grace Redfield) to be a good role model.

The move back to her home town of Los Angeles, Alice appears as a new beginning the first step in the right direction. She is also celebrating her 40th birthday in the city of California, where she meets three emerging filmmakers who are looking for a provisional place until they have gained a foothold. Following the advice of her mother (Candice Bergen), Alice brings the three young men (Nat Wolff, Jon Rudnitsky, and Pico Alexander) into their own. This leads to an unexpected change in their everyday lives and creates a very unconventional family in which it also crackles romantically neatly. When Alice's ex-husband gets wind of it, he is quickly back on the mat, and the chaos of the diced household soon becomes perfect.
